چکیده

light petroleum or carbon tetrachloride, but was extracted into butanol, in which the colour was stable for several days. The product of bufotenin oxidation remained in the aqueous phase with all the above-mentioned solvents including butanol. When a concentrated solution of serotonin was oxidized by concentrated denaturing oxyhaemoglobin, the filtrate was a turbid brownish pink which formed a black precipitate overnight. The addition ofascorbic acid to the pink product causes a rapid loss ofcolour, but the fluorescence does not return. The product was tested for possible biological activity on the heart of the clam Venu8 mercenaria, with essentially the bioassay procedure ofTwarog & Page (1953). No activity was found for the oxidized products of serotonin, bufotenin, 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-HIAA.

Nitrate, NO and haemoglobin in plant adaptation to hypoxia: an alternative to classic fermentation pathways.

The role of nitrate reduction to produce nitric oxide (NO) and its subsequent oxidation by oxyhaemoglobin as a mechanism to maintain plant cell energetics during hypoxia is examined. Nitrate reduction in hypoxic conditions can be considered as an alternative respiratory pathway, with nitrate as an intermediate electron acceptor, contributing to the oxidation of NADH. NO, produced in the reactio...

The rate of reaction of superoxide radical ion with oxyhaemoglobin and methaemoglobin.

Superoxide radical ions (O2-) produced by the radiolytic reduction of oxygenated formate solutions and by the xanthine oxidase-catalysed oxidation of xanthine were shown to oxidize the haem groups in oxyhaemoglobin and reduce those in methaemoglobin as in reactions (1) and (2): (see articles) Reaction (1) is suppressed by reaction (8) when [O2-]exceeds 10 muM, but consumes all the O2- generated...

Mechanism of methaemoglobin reduction by human erythrocytes.

The time course of methaemoglobin reduction in human erythrocytes treated with nitrite was studied at pH 7.4, 37 degrees C, in the presence or absence of Methylene Blue, and the changes in methaemoglobin, intermediate haemoglobins and oxyhaemoglobin during the reaction were analysed by isoelectric-focusing on Ampholine/polyacrylamide-gel plates. In both cases, with or without the dye, the inter...

Quality Changes in Australian Red Claw Crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, Stored at 0°C

Shell-on tails of 70 juvenile Australian red claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, were separately packaged in seven sealed plastic freezer bags (10 in each) and stored on ice (0°C) for 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 days. At the end of each storage period, raw muscle homogenate from five tails (pooled) were analyzed for lipid peroxidation, proteolysis (electrophoreis), and thermal stability (diffe...
